Credits and licenses

Hanping Chinese Lookup is built on work published by other people. This page names all of it, and says which parts of the site are not covered by those licenses.

Dictionary data

Entries come from CC-CEDICT, © MDBG, used under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 license. The definitions are CC-CEDICT's own; the formatting around them — tone marks, your Simplified/Traditional and pinyin/zhuyin preferences, the ordering of entries — is ours.

The offline copy you can save to your device (“Available offline”) is that same CC-CEDICT data, under that same license.

Stroke order

The stroke-order animations come from Make Me a Hanzi, derived from the Arphic PL fonts and used under the Arphic Public License.

Fonts

The Chinese text on this site is drawn with subsets of these faces, each cut down to the characters the site actually renders:

Exam levels

HSK and YCT badges follow the official vocabulary lists published by Chinese Testing International. The levels are stated as published; the lists are not reproduced here.

Audio

Single-syllable readings are recordings of a native Mandarin speaker, made for Hanping. Longer words and phrases are synthesized speech.

What is not covered by the above

The example sentences and their English translations, and the voice recordings, are original work: they are not part of CC-CEDICT and are not under its ShareAlike license. They, together with this site's own text, design and code, are © 2026 EmberMitre Limited, all rights reserved.
